Ed Whitlock was a renowned Canadian long-distance runner known for his remarkable achievements in the sport, particularly in the age-group category. Whitlock began running seriously in his 40s and continued to compete into his 80s. His passion for running was evident throughout his life, and he often trained alone in the Milton, Ontario area.  His success in long-distance running helped break down stereotypes about aging and fitness.

  • The Milton, Ont., native held 36 world age class records on the road and track.

  • He set multiple age-group world records in distances ranging from 5,000 meters to the marathon. Notably, he became the first person over the age of 70 to complete a marathon in under three hours, achieving this feat at the age of 73 during the 2004 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
